Words From a Simple Heart

by Teri McPherson
[essay]

Kings and Queens of drama are ever watchful, always ready to make a big production out of the slightest tone of a word, the simplest turn of an eye. They expend a lot of energy and put out great amounts of effort in their search for conflict. If there’s trouble to be found, they’ll find it and embellish the details. If there’s none, they’ll create it.

We are the bit players. They seek us out in the work place, social circles and family settings, constantly slipping us lines of dialogue on the sly.

“Did you see the look on her face when…?”

“Did you hear what he said when…?”

“Can you believe…?”

“Did you know…?”

As long as they can lure us into acting in a scene or two, the drama continues to unfold. As long as they can interest us in the plot and convince us to listen to the storyline, the play continues.

Without us, there are no actors. Without us, there is no audience. Without us, the Kings and Queens of drama have no one to play to.

We have scant enough time for the important issues in our lives. There are real conflicts, problems and troubles that deserve our energy and attention. Any amount of time we spend being caught up in irrelevant, insignificant and imagined ones, is too much time.

Pettiness is perpetuated by participation. The next time you’re asked to play a bit part in a paltry drama, turn down the offer.
